The Albany Biosphere and the Conservation landscapes Institute
The Eastern Cape is a biodiversity hotspot, home to seven of South Africa’s nine biomes and an incredible variety of species. Its global ecological importance is undeniable.
Over the past two decades, the region has seen impressive but scattered efforts to expand State Protected Areas and establish private wildlife reserves and game ranches. However, because these areas are often small and isolated, they need to be connected through ecological corridors to maximize their conservation impact.
That’s where the Conservation Landscapes Institute comes in. As a registered South African Non-Profit Organisation, it aims to create a network of linked conservation landscapes stretching from Addo Elephant National Park to the Great Fish River Nature Reserve—an area known as the Albany Biosphere. Beyond conservation, the Institute is committed to fostering a thriving nature-based economy that benefits local communities. By working closely with a diverse range of stakeholders, it hopes to create a sustainable future for both people and wildlife.
